Odisha is home to some of Eastern India’s most breathtaking natural landscapes, and a trip covering Keonjhar and Simlipal offers the perfect blend of waterfalls, dense forests, wildlife, and tribal culture. This itinerary is ideal for nature lovers, photographers, and anyone looking to escape city life.
Day 1: Arrival & Exploring Keonjhar
Start your journey by reaching Keonjhar, well-connected by road from Bhubaneswar, Cuttack, and Rourkela. After checking into your hotel, begin exploring the town’s natural wonders.
Your first stop should be Sanaghagara Waterfall, a wide cascade on the Baitarani River, especially stunning during monsoon and post-monsoon months. Nearby, visit Badaghagara Waterfall, known for its height and serene surroundings. Both waterfalls are surrounded by lush greenery and are perfect for photography.
In the afternoon, visit the revered Maa Tarini Temple at Ghatagaon, one of Odisha’s most important Shakti Peethas. The spiritual ambiance and forested hills around the temple make it a calming experience.
End your day with a visit to Kanjipani Ghati, a scenic mountain pass offering panoramic views of Keonjhar’s dense forests and winding roads. Return to your hotel for an overnight stay.
Day 2: Keonjhar to Simlipal National Park
After breakfast, drive towards Simlipal National Park, located around 150–170 km from Keonjhar. The scenic journey itself is a highlight, passing through forests, tribal villages, and rolling hills.
Upon arrival, check into a forest guest house or eco-resort near Baripada or Jashipur. After lunch, head out for a forest safari (subject to forest department permission). Simlipal is home to Bengal tigers, elephants, leopards, deer, and over 300 species of birds.
Visit Barehipani Waterfall, one of India’s highest waterfalls, cascading dramatically amidst thick forest cover. Nearby Joranda Waterfall is equally mesmerizing and easily accessible.
Spend the evening soaking in the peaceful atmosphere, enjoying local Odia cuisine, and listening to forest sounds under a starlit sky.
Day 3: Simlipal Exploration & Return
Begin early with a guided nature walk or safari deeper into Simlipal. Explore tribal hamlets and learn about the lifestyle of indigenous communities who have lived in harmony with nature for centuries.
After breakfast, start your return journey towards Baripada or Keonjhar, depending on your onward travel plans. If time permits, visit Devkund near the Mayurbhanj–Keonjhar border, another sacred waterfall nestled in a forest setting.
Best Time to Visit
The best time to plan a Keonjhar–Simlipal trip is October to March. Monsoon months make waterfalls spectacular, but forest entry may be restricted during heavy rains.
A Keonjhar and Simlipal trip is a refreshing escape into Odisha’s untouched wilderness. With majestic waterfalls, spiritual sites, and rich biodiversity, this itinerary promises a memorable and rejuvenating travel experience.
