Nestled in the Kendrapara district of Odisha, Bhitarkanika National Park is one of India’s most unique eco-tourism destinations. Known for its dense mangrove forests, saltwater crocodiles, and rich birdlife, Bhitarkanika offers a peaceful yet thrilling escape into nature. This trip plan is perfect for wildlife enthusiasts, photographers, and slow travelers seeking offbeat experiences.
Day 1: Arrival & Local Exploration
Begin your journey by reaching Bhubaneswar or Cuttack, the nearest major rail and air hubs. From there, travel by road to Kendrapara or Chandbali, which serves as the main entry point to Bhitarkanika. The drive takes around 4–5 hours and passes through scenic villages and riverside landscapes.
After checking into a forest lodge or eco-resort, spend the afternoon exploring nearby attractions. Visit Bagagahan Bird Sanctuary, a haven for migratory birds during winter months. Later, take a short nature walk through mangrove trails to understand the unique ecosystem and spot reptiles, mudskippers, and crabs.
In the evening, enjoy local Odia seafood or vegetarian cuisine and relax amidst the calm surroundings. Overnight stay near Bhitarkanika.
Day 2: Boat Safari & Wildlife Experience
Start early with a guided boat safari through Bhitarkanika’s intricate network of creeks and rivers. This is the highlight of the trip. Glide through mangrove tunnels while spotting saltwater crocodiles, water monitor lizards, kingfishers, egrets, and Brahminy kites.
Visit the Dangamal Crocodile Breeding and Research Centre, where you can see some of the largest crocodiles in captivity and learn about conservation efforts. Nearby, explore the ruins of an ancient temple and heritage structures hidden within the forest.
Post lunch, continue your boat safari towards Habalikhati or Ekakula, pristine beaches near the park where river meets the Bay of Bengal. These untouched beaches are ideal for quiet walks and sunset views.
Day 3: Birdwatching & Return
On the final day, wake up early for birdwatching along riverbanks and wetlands. Winter months attract species like storks, herons, and migratory waterfowl. After breakfast, check out and begin your return journey to Bhubaneswar or Cuttack.
If time permits, you can visit Gahirmatha Marine Sanctuary, famous for Olive Ridley turtle nesting (November to March), one of the largest mass nesting sites in the world.
Best Time to Visit
The ideal time to visit Bhitarkanika is October to March. Summers can be hot and humid, while the monsoon season may restrict boat movements and park entry.
Travel Tips
Always carry valid ID for forest entry permits
Follow safari guidelines strictly for safety
Carry binoculars, sunscreen, and insect repellent
Avoid plastic to help preserve the ecosystem
A Bhitarkanika trip is a rare opportunity to experience India’s second-largest mangrove ecosystem in its raw and untouched form. With serene waterways, incredible wildlife, and tranquil beaches, Bhitarkanika promises an unforgettable nature retreat in Odisha.
