In mid-September 2025, India’s Northeast witnessed a landmark moment: Mizoram’s long-cherished dream of direct rail connectivity with the rest of the country has come true. As part of the inauguration of the Bairabi-Sairang railway line, several new train services were flagged off, including the Kolkata (Kolkata-Sairang) Express, which connects West Bengal’s capital region with Sairang, a station about 20 km from Aizawl, Mizoram’s capital.
Engineering and Infrastructure Feats
The Bairabi-Sairang line spans 51.38 kilometers and has been described as one of the most challenging railway projects in recent times. It includes 45 tunnels, 55 major bridges, 87 minor bridges, along with multiple over- and under-passes. One stand-out structure is Bridge No. 144 near Sairang, which at about 114 meters in height surpasses the height of Qutub Minar.
Sanctioned back in 2008-09 and seeing construction start in 2015, the project underscores both the engineering challenges of building in difficult terrain and the strategic importance placed on connecting remote Northeast states.
The Kolkata-Sairang Express: Route, Timings, and Schedule
- The train, also known as Train No. 13125 / 13126, runs thrice a week in each direction. It covers approximately 1,485 km between Kolkata (KOAA) and Sairang (SANG) in about 31 hours and 15-20 minutes.
- From Kolkata, the 13125 departs at 12:25 PM, reaching Sairang the next day around 7:45-7:50 PM. The reverse, 13126 from Sairang, leaves at 7:15 AM and reaches Kolkata in the afternoon (~2:30 PM) the next day.
- There are 24-26 stops en route, crossing through major stations and junctions in West Bengal, Assam, and then into Mizoram. Key stops include Naihati, Krishnanagar City, Murshidabad, New Jalpaiguri, Guwahati, Badarpur, Hailakandi, and Bairabi among others.
- Coach composition features a mix of General, Sleeper, AC 3-Tier, AC 2-Tier, and an “AC 3-Tier Economy” class, offering a range of comfort options for travelers.
Impact, Opportunities, Challenges
What this means for Mizoram and the Northeast:
- Enhanced connectivity: For the first time, people in Aizawl and neighbouring areas can travel to Kolkata (and beyond) by train, avoiding lengthy road journeys or expensive air travel.
- Economic and trade boost: Freight operations have also been launched on the Bairabi-Sairang line, promising to reduce costs for goods like cement, steel, agricultural produce and more. Local produce, including fruits and vegetables, may now find easier access to bigger markets.
- Tourism promotion: Easier access might lead to growth in tourist inflow into Mizoram, which is rich in natural beauty.
Challenges to keep an eye on
- Journey time: Even at 31+ hours, the average speed (~47 km/h) is modest, largely due to the terrain, many stops, and engineering constraints.
- Frequency: With only thrice‐weekly frequency, options are limited; demand may be constrained by this.
- Last mile / road access: Since Sairang is still ~20 km from Aizawl, passengers will need good road connectivity; building supporting infrastructure and transport to/from stations matters.

This train service is more than merely a new timetable—it represents a symbolic and material step toward integrating the farthest corners of our nation. For Mizoram, and indeed the Northeast, the Kolkata-Sairang route could be a lifeline for social, cultural, and economic exchange. More frequent services, faster travel, better last mile connectivity, and full utilisation of freight potential would multiply the benefits.
