This route offers a seamless blend of mountain passes, alpine lakes, Buddhist monasteries, and memories that last a lifetime.

Here’s a detailed day-by-day itinerary for an unforgettable 10-day trip:

Day 1: Arrive in Jammu – Local Exploration

Start your journey in Jammu, the winter capital of Jammu & Kashmir. Known for its temples, especially the famous Raghunath Temple, you can spend the day exploring local markets, enjoying traditional Dogri cuisine, and prepping for the road ahead. Overnight in Jammu.

Day 2: Jammu to Srinagar (270 km / 7-8 hours)

Hit the highway early and drive towards Srinagar, passing through lush green valleys and quaint towns. Stop at Banihal Pass or Jawahar Tunnel to take in the views. By evening, reach Srinagar and relax on a shikara ride in Dal Lake, followed by dinner at a local Kashmiri restaurant. Overnight in a houseboat or hotel.

Day 3: Srinagar Sightseeing

Explore the beauty of Mughal Gardens, Nishat Bagh, Shalimar Bagh, and Hazratbal Shrine. Don’t miss the traditional markets at Lal Chowk. If time allows, take a short trip to Gulmarg or Sonmarg. Rest well, as the next day is a long drive. Overnight in Srinagar.

Day 4: Srinagar to Kargil (200 km / 7-8 hours)

This is where the mountain magic begins. Drive through Sonmarg, and then cross the mighty Zoji La Pass — an adrenaline-pumping ascent known for snow walls and sharp turns. Descend into the beautiful Drass Valley, often referred to as the “second coldest inhabited place on Earth.” Stop by the Kargil War Memorial in Drass before reaching Kargil town for the night.

Day 5: Kargil to Leh (220 km / 6-7 hours)

The road to Leh is breathtaking. Visit Lamayuru Monastery, one of the oldest in Ladakh, and marvel at the Moonland terrain nearby. You’ll also pass through Magnetic Hill, the Sangam (confluence of Indus and Zanskar Rivers), and Gurudwara Pathar Sahib. Reach Leh by evening and rest, allowing your body to acclimatize to the high altitude.

Day 6: Leh Local Sightseeing

Take it slow today. Visit Leh Palace, Shanti Stupa, and the vibrant Leh Market. Enjoy local Ladakhi dishes and soak in the Tibetan Buddhist culture. Acclimatization is key, so avoid exertion. Optional visit to Thiksey Monastery or Shey Palace. Overnight in Leh.
