Dashrath Manjhi, known as the Mountain Man, was a laborer from Gehlaur village near Gaya, Bihar. After his wife’s tragic death in 1959 from injuries sustained in a fall, he embarked on a remarkable feat using only a hammer and chisel. Over 22 years of relentless effort, he carved a 110-meter long, 9.1-meter wide, and 7.7-meter deep passage through a range of hills. This reduced the distance between Atri and Wazirganj blocks in Gaya from 55 kilometers to 15 kilometers. His life inspired the 2015 film “Manjhi The Mountain Man” directed by Ketan Mehta. In 2016, he was honored with a postage stamp by the Indian Post. Dashrath Manjhi’s extraordinary achievement was recognized nationally when he was felicitated in New Delhi by Nitish Kumar, then-chief minister of Bihar.
